Ralph Trimble discovered, to his dismay, that his Entourage database had not been properly backed up by Time Machine because on his system Entourage is always open.

It's been discussed here before, but most people don't read MacInTouch every day (though it's a good idea!)

Any database program, like Entourage, Lightroom, MySQL databases (perhaps Bridge?) should not be open when a backup is run (using any backup software, not just Time Machine); the tables might get out of sync. Apple fixed this issue with Aperture by making Time Machine skip Aperture altogether if the app was open.

When setting up new clients who use such programs, I treat those separately using scheduled backups with another program (Carbon Copy Cloner, Chronosync, Backup, or CrashPlan) and make sure the user understands that app needs to be closed during the backup period.

There are other ways of dealing with some databases; I think, for instance, Lightroom can automatically back up its own data, then Time Machine can be allowed to back up the backup. Filemaker Server can do this too.

In your excellent Snow Leopard FAQ, you suggested (correctly) that upgraders should 'Clone your startup disk to an external drive. (SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner both offer this function for free.)'

Another free option is Disk Utility. It's accessible when booted from the Snow Leopard startup disk, so it becomes the easiest option for those who do not have a second bootable volume (since it is better to clone a drive when it is not currently booted).

[That's true, but we find the operation less intuitive in Disk Utility, and one sure doesn't want to 'backup' in the wrong direction by accident! -MacInTouch]

Longtime reader here, wanted to let you and the fellow readers know of a workaround for the Xerox Phaser 6120 Color Laser Printer with Snow Leopard.

Currently, Xerox does not offer a driver for the Phaser 6120 which will function under Snow Leopard. According to their tech support, one is in development, but no timetable is given.

I cannot make the printer work from the USB interface at all, BUT if I connect via Ethernet and use the 'generic Postscript' driver, it works well, certainly well enough for casual use.

Hopefully we'll get the official driver sooner rather than later.

Best wishes

Your Snow Leopard tips doesn't yet note that Google Desktop is not compatible with 10.6, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Desktop#No_Mac_OS_X_10.6_Snow_Leopard_Support.

Re Larry's troubles with HP Scanner software since upgrading:

Snow Leopard includes built in support for HP (and I believe other brands) scanners. This can be accessed via Preview or Image Capture apps. I've tested wireless scanning with my Photosmart 7280 successfully, although haven't used it enough to compare Apple's implementation to HPs software.

This is to inform you that version 3.0 of Split&Concat just has been released for OS 10.5 and 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Split&Concat is a popular utility to split large files into .00n-parts and to join them again. The program also provides for the automatic creation of par and par2 archives which are frequently being used on Internet newsgroups. The program is also being used to distribute large files over several CD's or DVD's.

The new version 3.0 will not run on OS 10.4 (older version 2.5 still available). The release notes say the following:
- Code rewritten for Mac OS 10.6 'Snow Leopard' (and 10.5).
- Program no longer compatible with 10.4 or earlier due to compiler limitations.
- Several bug fixes, e.g. 'Cannot convert ' to integer' error is fixed.
- On Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode the program will benefit from the 64 bit 'split' and 'cat' system commands.
- Older registration keys will expire with this version.

The program can be downloaded from Split&Concat's web site: http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat

Regarding the compatibility of ArchiCAD and Snow Leopard: Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.6, I have been unable to open ArchiCAD. Tech support reported some have been able to open ArchiCAD but it would crash down the road, others, like me, were unable to open ArchiCAD at all. Last week Graphisoft posted a page on the problem (http://www.archicadwiki.com/SnowLeopard) and issued a warning via their resellers...

More from Graphisoft;
(Sept. 1) we reported compatibility of ArchiCAD 10, 11, 12 and 13 with Mac OS X10.6 (Snow Leopard) with two known issues. Unfortunately a new major issue has emerged since this communiqu?: applications can randomly crash due to a bad memory handling issue in the file dialogs of Mac OS X 10.6. Not just ArchiCAD is affected; it comes in most applications on the Mac, including Apple's own applications as well. We are in close contact with Apple to solve this problem. Apple is working on the solution with the highest priority but since we can reasonably assume that the problem will only get fixed on the OS side in a subsequent update we decided to take the following actions:
- We are asking our users not to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 until this
problem is resolved
- We do not delay the release of ArchiCAD 13
- We stay in close contact with Apple. In the case it seems it takesmore than a month solving the problem on their side, we will issue a hot-fix at the end of September / early October to work around the problem for each of the above ArchiCAD versions

The only workaround is to load and open the PC version of ArchiCAD within the VMware Fusion/Windows environment.

I received my Snow Leopard disk Saturday 29 August.
I updated my 3 backups.
Installation of 10.6 was trivial.

I was surprised when I got to work this morning (after a holiday weekend), to find that my Vodafone 3G modem (Huawei E220 USB modem) did not work (which is what I use to have internet access at work). I had visions of having to go back to Leopard......

The (Vodafone UK) Mobile Connect software simply would not open.

I called Vodafone technical Support, and explained the situation. They said that indeed their software does not work with Snow Leopard, nor was their work advanced enough to offer me a beta version. They were just not interested. They said the solution was weeks away.

I found on a blog:
http://www.24100.net/2009/08/using-vodafone-mobile-connect-with-snow-leopard-10a432/

that there is software (described as 'Mac OS Dashboard Software') that worked with Snow Leopard build version 10A432.
So I downloaded it from http://software.a1.net/vmc/Dashboard/VMC_MAC_3.04.01.00.dmg

It is Vodafone Mobile Broadband ' version 3.04.01.00.

I installed it, restarted and it is brilliant ! Works just fine with Snow Leopard. Fifty times better than the Vodafone UK software. Great GUI. Slick operation.

And it comes from ..... Vodafone Germany !

Obviously, Vodafone has got too big, if it does not know itself what is going on, inside the company.

I hope that this info would of help to someone else ......

Steve Seaquist writes the following.

Just tested Citrix ICA Client 10.00.600 with Snow Leopard and it worked just fine. (It's used to connect to Windows PCs over an encrypted connection.)

Further detail.

The current Citrix client is 11.000, and it uses a completely new architecture Unfortunately, it is not compatible with 64 bit browsers. Thus, one must use a 32 bit browser (e.g. Firefox) or force Safari to start in 32 bit mode. One can boot in full 64 bit mode, including kernal, but the browser must be 32 bit.

Problem: Installation of OS 10.6 breaks Sprint PCS service function with Sierra Wireless Compass 597 modem (+ possibly related products). Complaints re yet another failure of Sprint to anticipate Customer Service needs midst the year + notice of forthcoming SL, pale in comparison to the marketplace denouncement of Sprint for great commercials as a substitute for *service*. After another frustrating week of NO assistance from Sprint on the local (even worse) or national level, Sierra Wireless is to be commended for attempting to provide midst the void in the PCS customer service. The following *works* as an interim 'patch'; indeed the new Sierra extensions deliver a marked improvement for chronic problems with spontaneous disconnects. Hopefully, Apple will not be forced by the myopia of Sprint to downgrade performance of their OS to work with a 32bit version, etc. Sad..... but, competition is expanding their services across this land.... faster than any CEO taxi ride. As a footnote: if you perceive my evocation to be harsh, visit the endless pages of 'rant' on the Sprint user site. Sprint not only fails to deliver, they insult via Customer 'Service'. In contrast, Apple will intervene to address major problems reported on their user site.

4 September 2009: INTERIM Patch to Resolve Acute Issues with the Sierra Wireless Compass 597 EVDO Modem / Sprint PCS for users of Mac OS 10.6 / Snow Leopard.
NOTE: This is a temporary solution pending anticipated upgrades for OS 10.6, or belatedly, from Sprint. Read the entire PRIOR to beginning and perform in this sequential order. Yes, 'tis rather pedantic. To detail some unusual problems encountered for which this sequence avoids, belabors the need to press onward.

DOWNLOAD: For access URLs to both of the following, see -
http://www.sierrawireless.com/support/show_support_and_downloads.aspx?id=13,43,1,2

A. Current 'SmartView' driver from Sprint, but DO NOT OPEN the compressed file.
B. Current Sierra Wireless driver 'Watcher', but DO NOT OPEN the compressed file.

CLEANUP:
This is the critical step. Eliminate all installed Sierra Wireless / SmartView software BEFORE any attempt is made to install the new software.
A. Open and utilize the 'Sprint SmartView Uninstaller' software module provided with a Sprint Smartview package. [If a copy is not retained from a prior installation of SmartView, then install the newly downloaded, BUT RETAIN THE COMPRESSED DOWNLOAD ('SSV') for re-install once cleanup is complete.]
B. IF?.. Sierra Wireless Watcher has been installed midst efforts to restore function post-installation of OS 10.6, Open and utilize the 'SierraUninstaller' included with the download package.
C. DOUBLE CHECK: System>Library>Extensions. In alphabetical order, find and manually REMOVE TO TRASH any and ALL extension files which begin with 'Sierra' which remain despite the above uninstall processes. EMPTY TRASH.
D. Disconnect the Sierra Wireless modem from the computer.
E. ReStart the computer.

NEW INSTALLATION:
A. From the .dmg file, install the Sprint SmartView package in the prescribed manner, but do NOT open the app, SmartView.
B. From the .dmg file, install the Sierra Watcher package per instructions cited on the webpage cited above-
http://www.sierrawireless.com/support/installation_instructions.aspx?id=5,43,1
C. Per the above instructions, insert the Sierra Wireless modem.
D. Open Sierra Wireless Watcher.app. VOILA!! You should connect.

NOTE: Until Sprint resolves this mess, the user is advised to NEVER 'Open' the SmartView.app, which under some circumstances can corrupt this installation. Trashing the SmartView alias installed on the Desktop or Dock is advisable preventive medicine. Instead, total user control can be achieved via OS X System Preferences>Network Pane or the excellent GUI window provided by Sierra Watcher - - install the Watcher alias in the Dock. Checking 'Show modem status in menu bar' on the Network Pane will provide facile control from the menu bar. Corrections or updates are invited.

John MacKay's info about Citrix 11 requiring a 32-bit browser prompted me to run an experiment. I had run my test of Citrix 10 using Firefox 3.5.2, which is 32-bit. Could that have been the only reason why I succeeded? Is it possible that Citrix 10 has the same problem?

I decided to retest it using the Safari 4.0.3 that ships with Snow Leopard, which is 64-bit. It also ran just fine. So the incompatibility with 64-bit browsers was indeed introduced with the completely new architecture of Citrix 11, of which John speaks.

I have to use Citrix to connect to my work PC, so its compatibility is a real deal-breaker for me. I will resist the temptation to upgrade both Citrix to 11 and Firefox to 64-bit, when available.

In my conversation with Sony support they advised me that unfortunately Snow Leopard is not currently supported by the current versions of XDCAM-related software from Sony.

Since this is a very recent release from Apple that involves significant change to the Mac OS it may take several months, perhaps winter or spring for full Snow Leopard support from Sony. The exact schedule is still TBD. (SxS drivers is expected in September).

It is therefore recommended to continue using the most recent release of Leopard to maintain smooth operation of the XDCAM software within the Mac environment.

For anyone with HUAWEI 3G USB modems that came with 'Connection Managers' for 10.5 from various vendors around the world, be aware that you can generally get around the crashing connection manager issue by installing just the driver and configuring the connection in System Preferences > Network.

You can do this by going to the connection manager installer package, right clicking to 'Show Package Contents', and delving inside for a driver package. I had to do 'Show Package Contents' on another package inside the main one before finding the driver installer, but after running *that* package a new interface was indeed detected in System Preferences.

For MOST carriers, the only information you really need to know is the 'Access Point Name'. This can be defined once you choose the 'GPRS (GSM/3G)' modem type under the 'Advanced' section of the network preferences. From there, a phone number of '*99#' and either blank username/password or 'null'/'null' seems to do the trick for all the Australian carriers. YMMV of course, but I think the HUAWEI stuff is more or less 'all the same'.

Even if the connection manager isn't crashing, I much prefer to be able to connect/disconnect through a discreet icon in the menu bar than via the typically hastily coded and gaudily branded 'connection manager'.

Like many people, I had the frequent, apparently random logout/login problem where the screen would suddenly go blue, all running programs gone, and I'd be left back in the Finder as though I'd just rebooted.

I went through numerous solutions (e.g. eliminating old StartupItems, old startup daemons, old InputManagers) - which was a good idea anyway given some of the rubbish I had in there (like Retrospect! which, the last time I used it, refused to handle optical media.)

The final solution was going through /Library/Fonts/Microsoft and getting rid of any Microsoft font that duplicated an Apple font - all Arials, Tahoma, and six or seven others. That seems to have worked.

Originally everything in Rosetta had been stable but the sudden logouts became more and more common, spreading from Office to Eudora. This fixed them.

I've moved to Office 2008 but am stuck with Eudora until Infinity Data Systems gets MailForge to version 1.0, or as they will probably call it, 1.5. (That's my tongue-in-cheek way of saying 'until they get the bugs out, regardless of what version number they stick onto it.')

PowerCADD 7.0.6 won't even open under Snow Leopard. The Engineered Software web site suggests that a newer version 7.0.7 may solve the issue, but the blurb on the home page (www.engs.com) is contradictory in this regard (it also suggests that a $295 upgrade to PC 8 is mandatory). Furthermore, 7.0.7 is not to be found anywhere on their site (at least I can't locate it). I've sent an inquiry and will post the results here.

We have a Canon iRC4080. Canon has had this to say about support for Snow Leopard:

Canon Drivers

During testing of Snow Leopard, Technical Services found that none of the current Canon Mac OS X drivers for the imageRUNNER, LBP and FAX business models would function correctly. This includes the current CUPS PS v2.11, the PS v1.81, the UFR2 v1.80 and Fax v2.20 available from our web site. While the software would appear to install correctly, it was not possible to add a network printer queue using any of these drivers.

Upon escalating this issue to CINC, they confirmed that new versions of drivers would be required for v10.6 and they were planning on releasing these drivers in November 2009. As of the 25th August, CINC has not revised their initial release date of November 09.

Given that Apple has brought forward their release of v10.6 by several weeks, Technical Services has again asked CINC for any revision they have to their original release plan. Once we know any revised date we will inform you.

Customer Support

When I tried to install the drivers it hung on the 'Looking for software to update' stage and I had to force-quit. Despite this, it must have installed enough because I was able to add the printer back.

My brother tried the same thing but he was not able to add the printer.

On Huawei 3G USB modems, in my case E220 on Telia Sonera network in Sweden with the Telia Connect application.

There are no problems with the Huawei Datacard Driver 2.9.7 if you upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 with the drivers installed.

However, the driver will neither install properly nor create a new interface in Network preferences on a brand new 10.6 system. Telia Sonera is working on a fix.

The driver installation package is found by 'show package contents' on the application and navigating down a couple of levels.

I would like to report that the Ralink USB Wifi drivers for OS X work equally well in Snow Leopard as they did with Leopard. This was my greatest concern and I wasn't able to find confirmation anywhere on this. So I would like to confirm it for others. (In case you're wondering, my Airport card intermittently shuts off for no reason and needs to be replaced. Until I get a chance to send it in for service, I've been using a cheap d-Link USB Wifi dongle.)

Regarding the compability of eSATA ExpressCard for MacBook Pro:

Bad news is that after trying a reinstall of the old software - after working for a while - it now locks (permanent spinning ball) my computer completely when the card (IOgear) and the disk is connected. As I recollect it the machine unlocks the moment I remove the card)

Good news is that IOgear now acknowledge they've got a problem. Got this mail from their support today:

'At this time we are aware of the problems with the current driver and 10.6. When we have new drivers available they will be released to the product information web site.'

I was able to get a Brother HL-5370DW to work by moving the drivers over from 10.5. There are two drivers for this printer in 10.5, but the CUPS driver did not work. There are no drivers for this printer in 10.6. I also was able to get an HL-5170dn to work by using the Generic Postscript Driver.

None of the Canon print drivers for my Canon printers (iP8500 and Pixma Pro 9500) supplied with 10.6 seem to work. Canon had insisted that they do. The following is the latest that I received from Canon, preceded by my response with respect to the iP8500. Canon seems to concede that the drivers supplied by Apple do not work. Does anyone have any suggestions other than waiting?

Me to Canon

The drivers supplied with the Mac OS X v. 10.6 do not work. Vertical striations appear in landscape oriented prints. This occurs with both the Gutenprint driver and the Series iP8500 driver (both supplied with the OS update) when printing from Lightroom v. 2.4 and Photoshop CS4. This happens printing Canon CR-2 files and dng files (Lightroom) and psd and jpeg (Photoshop).

I will wait for updated drivers.

Our DFG QuickTime Drivers (Version 2.07 PPC only and Universal 3.01.03) :

Question for the gentleman who can't seem to set up his HP 1300:

Did you choose JetDirect-Socket under IP printing, then enter the IP address? Most HPs require the JetDirect setting instead of LPD or IP.

For the gentleman who can no longer see his LaserWriter 16/600: AppleTalk is not included in Snow Leopard; it is dead. In order to continue to use your LaserWriter, you need to connect it via a parallel-to-usb cable, or connect it to another computer running Leopard or below as an AppleTalk bridge.

Fujitsu has noted compatibility issues between the company's ScanSnap document scanners and Snow Leopard.

The 'Scan to Folder' function in their ScanSnap software is not listed as compatible. I can confirm that scanning files to a folder (the only action I ever use in their software) results in a helper application quitting. However, a scanned document file is saved into the destination folder. The application quitting is inconvenient.

They further state: 'Scanning to file, scanning to Adobe Acrobat (S1500M / S510M), scanning to email, scanning to iPhoto, and scanning to printer may be used in most cases.'

I've been holding off moving my hard-core work applications off my G5 tower to my (much faster) MacBook, simply because a fair few of them are legacy apps designed and built a fair while ago. Case in point: LightWave 7.5d, which was released in 2004 to counter bugs against Apple's implementation of OpenGL in Mac OS X 10.3.0 (yes, that long ago). LightWave 7.5 flat was released in 2002.

LightWave is a little odd in that it uses a USB dongle to authenticate the software. The driver support for that has proved robust over the years, however. The framework for the dongle was last updated well before 7.5d.

So, with some trepidation, I moved LightWave over to my MacBook, knowing that it was a). PowerPC only, b). updated for the brand-new-at-the-time 10.3 but designed for 10.2, c). most definitely 32-bit and d). had possible dongle driver issues at the kernel level.

Imagine my surprise when it just worked.

That's it. Nothing to report. All my third-party plugs work, all my files open, everything just... works. And it's so much faster than on my G5, even under Rosetta.

Colour me impressed. I'm mailing the guys to let them know how awesome their coders were seven years ago. :)

Hello All,

We at Moksa have been testing it since Snow Leopard's release and will continue to do so, but at this point, all seems to be working perfectly. I will caution the following: Snow Leopard installs Java 6, and to date, 3rd party plugins have been written to 1.5. We are working on that, so stay tuned. We will keep you of on 3rd party product compliance as things unfold. Hope this helps.

'One reader asks,

'how do I get Snow Leopard to find my Laserwriter 16/600 PS?'

I have the same printer. Just select IP printing and enter the correct network address of the printer.

If it is set to 0.0.0.0 that will not work. You will then need to run laser printer utility in OS 9 to change it to something like 10.0.0.xxx.

I did this as my old Pismo laptop can boot into OS 9. I know it is a work around but once the correct IP address is set up the printer works with all its features.
